Nymphs in Winter
Today I'm featuring Winter Swans, by Danica Winters, third in the author's Nymph series. Together with The Nymph's Labyrinth and Montana Mustangs, this series offers intriguingly different paranormal romance, and a lovely look at a part of the country I've rarely visited.
I recently read all three books in the series, and today I'll be posting my reviews of them, one by one... so come back later to read more...
My Review of Nymph's Labyrinth:
WINTER SWANS BLURB:
“Sometimes you run away from things, thinking it’s better
than fighting.” Ariadne and Beau have both done their fair share of running in
Danica Winters’ Nymphs’ Labyrinth. So
Beau pursues his career in archeological studies, minus wife and son, while
Ariadne pursues a loveless affair with the local politician. And others pull
their strings.
Nymphs’ Labyrinth
is a nice combination of straightforward romance, set in a pleasingly exotic
location, with paranormal mystery. Ariadne has secrets that no-one would
believe, and a haunting sense of guilt that keeps her obeying rules instead of
following her heart. Meanwhile Beau has no room in his heart until his son
appears. Then he reveals himself as the guilt-ridden father who ran from things
rather than arguing.
Still, if there really are gods and goddesses, perhaps
there’s hope these two will find each other. And a goddess who values love
higher than obedience, and honesty more than the letter of the law, is
certainly appealing.
A tale of love that overcomes boundaries, doubt and cost,
and a novel of relationships rebuilt on true communication, Danica Winters’
novella offers a nicely enticing twist on Greek mythology, with sexuality as
powerful and real as befits all those sensuous Greek statues.
My Review of Montana Mustangs:
And now, my review of Winter Swans; the logic wasn't failing after all, but instead is revealed in a fascinating sequel that amply demonstrates the author's skill at creating complete stories while keeping back just enough details to leave the reader eager for more.
My Review of Montana Mustangs:
The giant horses of mythology, now tamed by humankind, live
out their lives on ranches of Western US. Wild creatures, rounded up by the
BLM, and beaten into submission, perhaps all they need is a trainer who cares,
or a leader with power. But Aura’s sister has disappeared, and there are
reasons Aura believes her sister might have been both trainer and leader.
Author Danica Winters slides the intriguing possibility of
shape-shifting nymphs very gently into her tale, first creating characters the
reader enjoys, then adding that mysterious touch of reimagined Greek myth. A
gory discovery and some unexplained deaths bring cop and horse-trainer
together. And eternal nymphs prove paradoxically frail as the story progresses.
I wasn't sure about the logic, but the story's fun. And Aura is strong—the only
question, will strength allow her to resist the siren call of true love?
Cross the magic and romance of Lisa Hendrix’s Immortal
Brotherhood series, with the thoroughly modern (and magical) female
protagonists of Judi Fennell’s mermaids, and you’ll have the flavor of Danica
Winters’ Nymphs Series, an exciting mix of action, adventure, Greek
myth, sensual romance, and mystery.
And now, my review of Winter Swans; the logic wasn't failing after all, but instead is revealed in a fascinating sequel that amply demonstrates the author's skill at creating complete stories while keeping back just enough details to leave the reader eager for more.
My Review of Winter Swans:
Third in Danica Winters’ Nymph Series, Winter Swans is
perhaps the strongest entry so far. Readers are drawn immediately into the
mixed emotions of a grieving immortal who has lost her sister, and a
high-stakes gambler whose wife walked out long ago. Threats and promise are immediate, with
intriguing mystery and convincing drama as commitment-phobic gambler meets wary
nymph. New obligations bring old emotions to the surface, and the dramas of
fatal love take on even greater significance when the loved one is a grieving
child. But even the child hides secrets in this tale.
Pleasingly intriguing, sensual without being over the top,
and built on a fascinating blend of mythology and present day issues, this
story launches the series onto a longer,
more complex journey, and showcases the author’s skill at creating complete novellas
within the framework of a growing series. Readers could start here as easily as
anywhere else, but will almost certainly want to find out more.
Disclosure: I was
given free ecopies of these as part of a blog tour, and I offer my honest review.
WINTER SWANS BLURB:
A curse that forbids her to love…A
child that he must keep secret…An attack on the culture she holds dear…And a
battle that could get them killed…
Single dad and professional poker player, Chance Landon,
hates the world after his ex-wife is found dead in a cheap apartment in rural
Idaho. On a lone-wolf crusade to find
the killer, he instead learns that he is the father of a strange little girl
who carries secrets that only a woman like his ex-wife can answer.
When his ex-wife’s killer learns about his daughter’s
abilities and decides to come after the young girl, Chance enlists the help of
the beautiful and deadly swan-shifting nymph, Harper Cygnini, who helps to
teach him the truth of his daughter’s condition. Chance soon realizes that he alone can’t save
his daughter from the sadistic killer and he finds himself in a battle between
his head and his heart. Will Chance
gamble on a future that involves falling in love—which may well cost him his
life—or is that one bet his is unwilling to take?

better be filled with wine.
