I really like 2009 !

It looks like I'm walking on air again, with another exciting email yesterday, so please excuse me while I do the happy dance. 2009 is just such a good year! First I made the quarter-finals of ABNA . Then Lulu put my books on Amazon . Then my short story got accepted for Mythica ’s Maybe Tomorrow. And now my triptych of Western Tales has made it into VoiceCatcher 4. Now, if I could just make a few good sales...

Constructive Criticism?

I was reading a blog on Constructive Criticism a few minutes ago. So okay, so maybe now I should confess how badly my novel did in the ABNA contest. After all, I was way over the moon when it made the quarter-finals, and couldn't wait to tell everyone. All we quarter-finalists got "Publishers Weekly" reviews, but those of us who failed to make the next cut received them in private. Which is probably just as well. My one begins: "The writer of this novel simply hasn’t learned how to tell a story," then goes downhill. But at least they called me a "writer," says she, clutching at straws. "...after the 20th character, the reader begins to lose track..." probably means I shouldn't have had so many people in the story, or else I should've made it clearer who was who. (The review lists the same character as being at least two different people later, so perhaps the latter). "...no motive ever discovered" might mean I didn't mak...

Writing a poem a day in April

Writers' Digest is posting a poetry prompt on http://blog.writersdigest.com/poeticasides/ each day in April. I guess it's sort of a competition, but with around a thousand entries a day I don't suppose I'll win anything. Still, it's a fun challenge, and there's lots of good poems to read. Hope to see you there. Meanwhile, there's so many great Amazon Breakthrough Novel entries to download - www.amazon.com/shorts . Do give Divide by Zero a look if you get time. Thanks.

I'm an ABNA quarter-finalist !!!!!

Okay, so ABNA , for those not addicted to writing competitions, means Amazon Breakout Novel Award . This is the first year I've dared to enter. And I got an email from Amazon last night to say I'd reached the quarter-finals! That means me and 499 others, but there's "real" authors included in that list - people whose books I've bought and paid for and read and thoroughly enjoyed. So it may be raining miserably outside, but here at my computer I'm over the moon and basking in literary sunshine. There are other rewards too, besides sunshine. My first 24 pages are now a free download on Amazon shorts - http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001UG3C1M - and real people, friends and strangers, can rate and review. Plus I already have one review, written by a genuine "Amazon Vine" reviewer. Meanwhile the folk at Publishers Weekly are reading and reviewing all 500 quarter-final entries. In April the Penguin editors will narrow the list to 100. And those who make it...
