What is it about Princesses?

Today I'm delighted to welcome Rose Marie Machario, author of the Amulet of Elements, to my blog, with an answer to a question that must surely be dear to my English heart...

What is it About Princesses?
By Rose Marie Machario

Since the dawn of the royals, we as a civilization have been fascinated by them. I think mostly it is because it was ingrained into our minds that royalty was perceived as being a higher status than the rest of the world at large. Over the course of time the higher monarchy was reserved for only a few remaining countries who recognize royalty as being of the highest regard in society. Therefore in today’s present mindset we still look upon royals as mere fascinations.

Throughout history there have been tales on high, and legends of old about royal families of all kinds. Kingdoms held mysterious stories found in old castles, and if those stone walls could talk, I’m certain they would reveal ancient tales like we’ve never heard before. The most popular of stories are of course written about love, and young love we compare to that of princes, and princesses. Although we may be a modern society, but we still swoon over a good tall tale of love at first sight.

Today we still wonder what it is that we love about princesses so much. Of course the answer is simple. We are all that little girl deep down who always wished to be a princess, with hopes that one day our prince would come to rescue us. We grew up with stories filled with fair maidens, princes on white horses, only to have become lost with our childhood. It is unfortunate now that we are so jaded with debauchery, but deep down we yearn to return to such innocence.

Tomorrow may come with a new generation filled with wonder and imagination for us all to believe in. A hope that may come with those stories of old, the princesses that we yearn to be. The place in our minds we go after those four little words of ‘once upon a time’ transports us to an enchanted land where we all long to be. If we can imagine what it would be like to be a princess, then it is within that imagination where we can all can dream of that happily ever after.

Ah, and "once upon a time" my friends and I all had pictures of a handsome prince pinned to inside of our schooldesks (we were English - we didn't have lockers!). Then he married his fairytale princess, then we learned that fairytales don't last. Still, they do return... and in fiction, we can still dream. Thank you for reminding me, Rose Marie.

About The Amulet of Elements:

Princess Ellyria Rose found her special places in the books she read. Imagining herself in far off lands, she would dream of the knight who might rescue her one day from her dull, everyday life of needlepoint and lessons on becoming a lady.

Princess Ellyria Rose yearned for adventure and on her sixteenth birthday she got her wish, being rescued by the man of her dreams. Little did she know that would prove to be an adventure she did not expect to have.

Betrayed by the very man whom Princess Ellyria trusted, and left at the mercy of her father’s enemy, she had to use her wits to escape; along with the help of the very man who led her astray in the beginning.

Danger unfolds time and again, revealing an ancient story about a princess and a prophecy.
