After Dark: Why Urban Fantasy?

Today I'm delighted to e-meet Joann H. Buchanan, author of the fascinating Children of Nox series of supernatural shifter novels. She is touring the internet with the last of the series, After Dark, and I've been following, enjoying reading her interviews and guests posts. But now I get to read her answer to the question...

Why is Urban Fantasy so popular?

by Joann H. Buchanan

The question posed: Why is urban fantasy so popular and is there one particular group attracted to it and why? I don’t have a straight answer for this question. The only way I can think of answering this question is by answering what makes me want to read a story.

I think the reason urban fantasy is popular is because it is set in the here and now. We can see ourselves in the characters we read. They remind us of situations we have been in with the people we either love or hate. I’m not saying we know what it’s like to change into a wolf or fly a broom. We do know what it’s like to listen to our friends when they are in pain, laugh when we all get together and understand when they need time. Urban Fantasy is a setting but without the human factor, it would be as dull as an empty building.

The term ‘human factor’ is really what good writing is all about. We can take our characters and put them in the most dire situations, but if they don’t have that fallible vulnerable side, then we are writing flat single dimensional worlds that have little or no life.  There is nothing better than taking a journey with a character and seeing them develop. When we see a character go from selfish to giving—when we travel with them through hardships and see them emerge stronger then we are in a sense, given hope. Possibly because we understand how feels to be alone, betrayed or in love. The reason any book is compelling in the fiction world is because we breathe life into it. We as writers take the time to make it real.

Urban Fantasy gives authors the ability to write in a setting that is relatable. I think that is without a doubt about as close to a real answer as I can personally give.

Thank you for everything.

Joann H. Buchanan

And thank you Joann. I think that really does answer my question. I love urban fantasy, and if I think about it, it's exactly as you say - the "human factor" that makes it not only feel real, but feel like the story matters.

Here are some links to Joann's earlier posts - the ones I said I'd been reading. And when you've read them, don't forget to look below for a great chance to enter the giveaway.
