Love in a Superhero World!

Today I get to welcome the awesome Ashley Rose Sullivan to my blog, author of the superhero novel, Awesome Jones. She's here to answer all our questions about...

Love In A Superhero World
By Ashley Rose Sullivan

My first novel, Awesome Jones is the story of a completely regular guy trying to navigate life, love,
and dinner in a superhero world. While heroes patrol Arc City, Awesome and Lona go to work, cook meals, and read the paper. Their relationship is the cornerstone of this novel and a lot of people ask, why a love story?

Really, why not? Superman had Lois Lane and Lana Lang. Spiderman had Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane.  Awesome and Lona have each other. Over the years comic book relationships evolved and deepened and prompted some legendary story arcs so it’s not like romance hasn’t always been part of comics. With Awesome Jones, I wanted to tell a story of two people attempting to live a normal life in a city where superhuman individuals aren’t all that uncommon. They’re equal partners in a relationship that heals them, strengthens them, and encourages them to reach their potential. Separate, they’re regular. Together, they might become exceptional in an already extraordinary world.

I began Awesome Jones seven years ago and creating the Awesome/Lona relationship was a natural move for me at the time. My own life had recently changed and I was living my own love story so writing another one wasn’t something I questioned. I just started developing Awesome’s story and Lona was an organic addition to that narrative. She became the heart of the book--just as determined, strong, and important as Awesome Jones--maybe more so.

In addition to the Awesome/Lona story, Awesome Jones takes a long view of relationships and covers four generations of couples. How two people come together and weather the storm of crazy circumstances in a crazy world is something that interests me. How people manage to stay together--or not--throughout the trials of their life is something I tend to think about. Likewise, the evolution of comics is something I’m particularly interested in so why not write about both at the same time? Talking about the changing times through the lens of personal, domestic issues just clicks for me. I like writing about dinner. I like writing quiet scenes. I like thinking about how the world spins and changes and throws obstacles in our path and what effect that has on those quiet scenes. Awesome Jones is a fairy tale. It’s just a fairy tale that happens to take place in a comic book world.

Cool! I'm intrigued by the idea of four generations in a superhero story--makes me really look forward to reading this! Meanwhile, for other readers, here's some more information about the author and the book, and don't forget to follow all those other links at the end of the post, to follow the rest of the tour.

About the Book: The only thing Awesome Jones wants is to be a super hero. Until he falls in love.

Despite his colorful name, Awesome Jones is a painfully average man who dreams of being a super hero, just like the ones who patrol his city. It's been that way since he was a little boy, raised by his grandfather after his parents' death.

The day Jones starts his new job as a file clerk at Akai Printing Company he meets secretary Lona Chang and everything changes. Lona sees something in Jones that no one ever has and the two quickly become inseparable. But when the perfect pair's domestic bliss is threatened by a super-powered secret from the past, Awesome Jones has to make a choice. He must decide whether he should play it safe or find the strength to live up to his name and risk everything he's come to love to save the day like he always dreamed.
